“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.” — Proverbs 4:7

Philosopher comes from the latin roots of philos and sophos meaning love and wisdom / sage respectively. Thus philosopher is a lover of wisdom, so the Humble Sage is philosopher of philosophers in the Philosopher subtypes. All men are to pursue wisdom (see above). Some are uniquely gifted with it. (1 Corinthians 12:8

Daniel was one of those men. Ripped out of his homeland and placed into the royal court of a foreign nation, he modeled wise living and the counsel of the Lord in a hard land. “God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.” (Daniel 1:17) Empowered by the Spirit of the Lord, the Humble Sage bears a similar ability. Like Daniel, who learned and grew in his understanding, the Humble Sage’s understanding is not only received as some transcendent insight. He loves to learn and to broaden how he might speak wisdom into the world.

In missions, he is a calming presence in times of anxiety or uncertainty. The Humble Sage possesses both the wise word and the wise timing for when to speak it. He, like the Bridge Builder, is an open and inviting presence out of which he speaks deep truth and words of impactful wisdom. As Solomon attracted people to Jerusalem with the news of his wisdom (1 Kings 10:6-9), so too will the nations be attracted to the Humble Sage. Out of his humble counsel, the Lord will build His Kingdom.

Listen to the wise words of the Lord. Apply yourself to understanding and learning. And speak in life and humility. May God’s people and the yet reached people of this world hear the voice of God in your words!
