“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” — Colossians 3:23-24
A kingdom is not established by mild, passive men. It is formed by the brash and the bold. Wise risk takers, who boldly expect the Lord will multiply their efforts, have a place in God’s Kingdom mission. The Entrepreneur is no exception.
Who is the Entrepreneur? He is the catalyst for the new. A keen observer he sees opportunity all around him. When others see problems, he envisions abundant solutions. He may be a literal entrepreneur starting up businesses or side hustles, or he may be the self-starter beginning new ministries or events to meet local needs. The idea of remaining put and managing something on infinite, daily repeat terrifies the Entrepreneur. He is a starter. The spark that starts the engine pumping.
In God’s missional work, God uses both the literal and figurative entrepreneur. Working in nations opposed to the Gospel, people cannot enter the country with “Missionary” slathered across their visa. Creativity becomes a necessity. Many men start entrepreneurial ventures, building businesses, which provide them trusted access, an income stream, and bless local people. The Entrepreneur, whether in business or otherwise, can create meaningful identities for other missionaries coming into the country. He, akin to the Path Carver, creates structures for others to learn language, establish families, and form local relationships. All are much needed services in the work of building the Kingdom of God.
Start something new! Opportunities and needs fill the earth. All that is missing is a willing servant who has a vision for solutions. God’s Kingdom awaits those bold enough to work heartily, strive mightily, and serve humbly. So, Entrepreneur, it’s time to start starting.
